Child care should be provided on the same basis as schooling of older children, as a responsibility of society. I join with other members of Women’s Electoral Lobby (WEL) Victoria in supporting the proposals to increase the number of high quality child care places and reduce the cost of child care for working parents. 
I believe that increased funding for child care services is necessary to ensure all families have access to quality, affordable care. All children should have access to quality preschool education.
I believe that commercial child care services should be treated in the same way as private schools, which are regulated by State Governments and must be not-for-profit organisations.

Ms Jackie Kelly, Liberal MP, has made an excellent suggestion that employers should be enouraged by tax deductions to assist in the provision of child care. I note that Ms Heather Ridout, CEO of the Australian Industry Group also supports the idea. Qantas and ANZ Bank have provided on-site child care and see it as a key staffing issue for their workforce. On-site child care attracts exemption from Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) but most businesses cannot set up their own child care centre. Businesses could support costs of family day care and off-site child care if FBT exemption were available. I urge you to consider these ideas seriously.
