All About WEL in the 21st Century

Women's Electoral Lobby --WEL-- began in Melbourne in February 1972 when Beatrice Faust with ten other women organised a survey of candidates standing for election. Responses were coded and scored.

Women were encouraged to “Think WEL before you vote”.

Women from all over Australia joined the call for measures to combat discrimination against all women.

Since then WEL, as a feminist non party organisation, has been acknowledged as a major political force and is regularly invited to participate by government and non government bodies in a wide range of community affairs.

WEL Victoria is now operating as an email group. This allows busy women from all walks of life and from city and country to contribute to discussion and strategies on the many issues facing women today.

Formal meetings are held three times per year.

The website will provide information to all women.

Lobbying is what WEL is good at and we now use modern approaches.
Members are provided with contact information about Federal and State politicians so that they can email, fax or phone their local member and contact the appropriate Federal or State Minister on issues of concern to women.
WEL also organises delegations to politicians in their offices.

WEL contributes to research and makes submissions to inquiries such as those by the Victorian Law Reform Commission (VLRC) and to Government inquiries.

WEL co-operates with other professional bodies in lobbying on these matters.

Women who have expertise in this and other matters are encouraged to join WEL.

We welcome all supporters even if they are too busy to assist but comments about policies and ideas are really welcome.
